During the interviews and group meetings with Testing Services, the Chemistry Department Dean, and the Director of Tutoring Services, it was determined that in order to put the Chemistry Camp Program together, all the departments were going to have to collaborate to staff the program. Because the Chemistry Department already staffed the Subject Matter Experts, they would be responsible for supplying the program with qualified Chemistry Professors to oversee the classroom portion of the program. Tutoring Services staffed Chemistry Tutors that could be responsible for small group activities and tutoring sessions. Testing Services would supply the testing material for the Chemistry Placement Exam as well as the staffing needed to proctor each exam according to university policy.
Scott (2008) describes the advantages to using internal consultants (university professors and tutors) as opposed to going outside the organization to staff learning programs. Specifically, Scott (2008) lists examples of internal consultant advantages as:
|
Chemistry Professors
Chemistry Professors will be responsible for creating the material that is used during the Chemistry Camp Workshop including the session workbooks, course material, and benchmark exam. Professors will undergo a two week blended training program to prepare them for the workshop sessions. During the training, professors will have the opportunity to collaborate with one another and create the materials they will need for the Chemistry Camp Workshop, work side by side with tutors to ensure that the material they are covering is familiar, and develop their own assessment and planning skills..
|
Chemistry Tutors
Chemistry Tutors will be responsible for creating small group activities and facilitating the small group study sessions. The tutors will undergo a two week blended training program to prepare them for the workshop sessions. During the training, tutors will refresh their skills in assessing student learning styles, identifying personality types, and strategies for working with difficult students. In addition, tutors will work side by side with the Chemistry Professors to ensure that they are familiar with the material that will be presented and have the opportunity to prepare their small group activities for the workshop.
|
Testing Proctors
Testing Proctors will be available to proctor the Chemistry Placement Exam according to the policies put forth by the University of Texas at San Antonio and the Chemistry Department. Since the exam, if passed, will allow students to by pass Basic Chemistry and be placed into General Chemistry I, there are very strict conditions for testing. the Testing Proctors will ensure that the conditions are consistent between workshop sessions and that all students testing adhere to the requirements for the exam.
Training Staff
Training staff will be responsible for developing and implementing a five day training over the course of one week for the professors and tutors. They will offer material on theories of adult learning, assessment, learning styles, personality types, session planning, group moderation, working with difficult students.
|
Auxiliary Staff
Auxiliary Staff will be responsible for contacting students via email and inviting them to participate in the Chemistry Camp Workshop. In addition, they will handle all registration, cancellation, confirmations, prepare name tags, prepare rosters for each session, communicate and arrange accommodations with housing, parking, and dining, be responsible walking participants from registration area to workshop classroom, keep digital records of all participants, benchmark scores and Chemistry Placement Exam scores, send digital surveys to capture participant feedback regarding the Chemistry Camp Workshop, and compile feedback reports for the program coordinator.
