Saving Money, Moving Forward, Reaching Goals
UTSA Tutoring Services' (UTSA-TS) mission is to promote lifelong independent learning. The focus of the center is placing the academic success of students first. In an effort to bring its mission to fruition, it is imperative that the student workers in the center are highly trained in the areas that support student success. UTSA-TS offers quarterly training to its student workers to improve and sharpen skills, however, not all student workers have the ability to make all available training because of class and outside employment. Providing an online training component, via social media, to the existing program will create more opportunities for student workers to access the training they may miss and continue to sharpen their skills as tutors, while saving the department valuable resources and training personnel time.

Chemistry Camp is a three day workshop offered to any student) who need to take the Chemistry Placement Test. Students registered for the workshop will have the opportunity to interact with seasoned UTSA Chemistry Faculty, receive quality instruction time, work in small groups with nationally certified tutors, and have the opportunity to take the Chemistry Placement Test immediately after the workshop.

While still a credit-bearing course, Basic Chemistry (CHE 1103) is not one of the courses required for most pre-medical, health occupations, or engineering class. The course was created for students who do not need General Chemistry as one of their core courses. However, it is a prerequisite to General Chemistry I (CHE 1304). Students have the opportunity to save themselves an entire semester by placing out of Basic Chemistry and into CHE 1304 by scoring a 70% or better on the Chemistry Placement Test, saving the student both one semester and the cost of a three credit course.

The Camp Workshop will be staffed by UTSA Chemistry professors. These professors will be responsible for the instructional time for the camp participants and provide materials for the workshop. Small group sessions will be run by certified UTSA Tutoring Services chemistry tutors. Prior to engaging in small group sessions, professors and tutors will undergo five days of instruction that includes adult learning theory, social media training, assessment, and session planning.
